CBD Water and Other CBD Drinks: Drinking from the CBD Well

CBD drinks and beverages can span from fruity and sweet to dark and bitter. They can range from CBD water to semi or full alcoholic beverages. They can come in many flavors with many other vitamins, minerals, and other wellness ingredients. CBD beverages have the same type of cannabidiol that other products use: full-spectrum, isolate, or broad-spectrum.

Although, the CBD oil that most users are familiar with – and what producers usually blend into products like creams and edibles – is hydrophobic (does not dissolve in water). This means that producers have to come up with ways to mix the oil into liquids like water or beer. The methods they do this have more to do with science than anything else.

What are CBD Drinks and Beverages?

CBD drinks and beverages, including CBD water, are liquids infused with cannabidiol, a phytocannabinoid found in hemp plants. Cannabidiol is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in the cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike THC, another cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, CBD is non-intoxicating.

Cannabidiol does have alleged therapeutic and medicinal properties, which is why it is now being touted as an alternative for treating several conditions, including anxiety, depression, and other serious illnesses. Although no one should replace prescribed medication with the extract, many people also take the supplement for non-medicinal reasons.

CBD now exists as a health supplement that consumers take in various ways – CBD drinks being one of them. The beverages are all potable, and makers claim that it is an easy way to ingest a dose of the hemp extract. CBD drinks are distinct from other CBD products for many reasons.

  • They contain only small doses of the extract
  • They do not have a long shelf life
  • They are expensive

So what is the draw of CBD beverages? This article will try to answer that question, and more so anyone looking to try CBD in a drink knows what they are getting.

How Does CBD in Drinks Even Work?

This is a question a lot of people ask. CBD usually comes in either oil (full-spectrum or broad-spectrum) or an ultra-refined powder (isolate), with the former not mixing well with other liquids. The oil is not water-soluble, so making a drink from a non-soluble liquid is not as easy as it sounds. Sure, a person could add a few drops of oil to their coffee or tea; only they are not guaranteed to feel any of the effects.

Making a CBD drink is not a matter of merely blending the oil into a different product, like with creams, or edibles. There are, of course, bars, coffee shops, and other restaurants that offer coffee, tea, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks with a dash of a CBD tincture or isolate. Still, those are limited to a specific place or establishment. And now, thanks to the FDA, it is also illegal.

Commercial CBD drinks and water are much more complicated. Hemp extract, after extraction, is an unstable compound that quickly degrades when exposed to light and oxygen. In response, many CBD manufacturers have had to find ways to infuse liquids with cannabidiol particles without losing their supposed beneficial properties.

They have turned to two methods to infuse beverages:

  • Nanotechnology – a high-tech way of reducing the size of the compound into nano-particles so it can be added to water particles
  • Water-soluble CBD – making water-soluble cannabidiol requires adding emulsifiers and other carriers, like vegetable glycerin to mix the oil with other liquids
  • Nano-emulsions – this process combines nano-tech with emulsifiers, as the broken down, nano-CBD particles are mixed with other particles that help them attach to liquid molecules

Makers of these beverages claim that these processes maintain all the benefits of the extract while making them even more bioavailable than other product forms. These are all unsubstantiated and unproven claims, so consumers should take them with a grain of salt.

Any cannabidiol product that people eat or drink will breakdown during the digestive process. This process is known as first-pass, where enzymes in the liver breakdown food and drink in the body, which reduces the bioavailability of cannabidiol. No matter how much a producer claims how much cannabidiol is in their drink or beverage, it will always be reduced when consumed.

Benefits of Drinking CBD-Infused Drinks

The main benefit of drinking CBD-infused drinks is its convenience. Many people would prefer having a quick sip of cannabidiol-based water than take unsavory, oil drops under the tongue, or using a vape pen filled with oil.

A can of soda, a bottle of water or a cup of tea are all everyday items that people will not think twice about drinking, which makes them ideal ways to consume something strange and new, like cannabidiol.

Another benefit of drinking a hemp-based beverage is that it is often blended with other health-conscious ingredients like ginseng, ginger root, hibiscus. Only CBD-water can lay claim to having only the extract as the main ingredient.

Correct Dosage Size for Cannabidiol Drinks

While there is evidence that CBD has potential beneficial properties, no one agrees as to the correct or precise dosage. The cannabidiol content of drinks and beverages varies among manufacturers. Some drinks have as little as 10-25mg, while others have 250mg or 500mg per bottle.

Other drinks or mixes and powders intended to be self-made could have more or less the same content. The general rule for taking hemp extract is that it should be taken daily to allow for the maximum effects. If someone is taking it for non-medicinal reasons, they can take smaller amounts, two or three times a day.

Users who have consulted a doctor for approval to take CBD should take larger amounts over the day. They could perhaps benefit from a one-shot, CBD drink that provides a single dose of the extract. Only those drinks contain other common soft drink ingredients like sugar, artificial flavors, and sweeteners, so they should be avoided if someone has other health problems.

How Long Will It Take to Feel the Effects of a CBD Drink?

The effects of CBD are different for everyone. Some feel relaxed and relieved of stress. While others still have less anxiety or less pain, if they are taking the supplement for those reasons. The effects of drinking a CBD infused beverage are hard to determine.

A lot depends on:

  • The CBD content of the extract
  • The type of extract in the drink (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate)
  • The reason you are taking hemp extract (medical vs. non-medical)

First off, if you are thinking about taking cannabidiol as a treatment for a condition like chronic muscle or joint pain, there are better products to consider, like a cream. It would be unwise to drink a hemp-infused beverage for something like arthritis or back pain.

If someone is interested in cannabidiol for non-medical reasons, drinking a can of CBD water could provide a boost of energy or focus during a busy day. Most users report feeling the “effects” of CBD an hour or two after taking a few sips from a beverage.

This timeline is also standard with sublingual drops. This delay in the delivery of effects is due to the extract making its way through the digestive system. After the first-pass, the body then introduces the compound into the body.

How Long Do The Effects Last?

The effects of cannabidiol, again, vary between products, strengths, and people. After drinking a cannabidiol-drink, users can expect to feel the lingering effects of the compound for anywhere between an hour and four hours. They could also feel nothing. Again, a lot depends on user expectations.

If a person with insomnia is taking the compound in capsule form, the length of time for their effects would be all night, or however long they sleep at night. If a person with arthritis is taking it for the pain in their hands, applying a cream should provide relief in a matter of minutes. If you are considering hemp extract for non-medical reasons, be aware that only after prolonged, daily use will the “effects” of hemp extract start to be noticeable.

Do CBD-Drinks Get You High?

No, CBD drinks do not get you high. A lot of the questions about the “effects” of cannabidiol and their duration comes from the association with that other, more well-known cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol, aka THC.

THC IS intoxicating. It will get you high, but it is the only cannabinoid (out of hundreds) that has this effect. Taking even high doses of hemp extract will not produce the same intoxicating results as taking THC, like forgetfulness, paranoia, and decreased motor ability.

  • CBD derived from hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC is legal.
  • CBD derived from cannabis plants with levels of THC higher than 0.3% THC is illegal.

These are the standards outlined in the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 that legalized industrial hemp production. The laws of the Hemp Farming Act are active at the federal level. Each state has its laws regarding the legality or illegality of hemp extract.

In Alabama, for example, marijuana (medicinal and recreational) is illegal. After the passing of the Hemp Act, though, they allowed hemp extract under the same federal regulations (less than 0.3% THC). However, as some products could have higher traces of THC than the legal limit, the police could arrest you if they suspect a product of being marijuana.

Consumers of hemp based-products need to be aware of the laws in their state before buying and consuming hemp extract. Another problem with the THC rule is that products can be mislabeled or consumers lied to, as some studies have found illegal amounts of THC is supposedly “legal” cannabidiol products.

If someone is tempted to bring a CBD-drink or oil with them while traveling, it would probably be best to leave it at home than risk crossing an international border with a semi-legal, misunderstood substance.

Where Can I Buy CBD Beverages?

There are several places a person can buy a cannabidiol drink. One place, and maybe the most popular, is online. Several online hemp extract retailers offer their proprietary products or a collection of products from other producers. While not rare, it would be hard to find a brick-and-mortar shop that carries a drinkable cannabidiol product, as:

  1. They are specialty products with only a handful of producers headquartered mostly in states where marijuana is legal
  2. They are not regular drinks and are subject to different regulations and rules

It would be hard to find local bars and cafes selling CBD-laced cocktails and cappuccinos, as well. Despite the craze over CBD martinis, cafe lattes, and other drinks, the FDA put a stop to that after they approved the epilepsy drug, Epidiolex, which is made from hemp extract. With that approval, the compound was officially classified as a “drug,” which then made it illegal to add to food and drinks. Right now, as it stands, the best way to get a cold, CBD drink would be to go to the source: online retailers.

Final Words: CBD Drinks and Beverages: One Wave of the Green Rush

CBD drinks and beverages are a convenient, and often, delicious way to ingest a dose of hemp extract. They come in several varieties with everything from seltzer water to powdered-drinks and single bottles available to all. They can serve as an introduction to the effects of cannabidiol for someone who has never tried it but is curious.

As the amounts of hemp extract in these beverages are low, people who need higher amounts of the compound could drink these beverages along with a regular cannabidiol regimen. They could take one a day or throughout the week or whenever required. If someone is wary of consuming added sugars or other artificial substances, they should probably settle for a strict hemp extract-only product. While CBD drinks are not the most effective means of ingesting the extract, they offer a window onto all the potential benefits that a regular cannabidiol habit can bestow.
