What Are CBD Bath Bombs Exactly?

Best bath bombs are small, globe-shaped composites that dissolve on contact with water. The little, colorful spheres have several layers. The outer layers usually contain a mix of bicarbonate (e.g., baking soda) and an acid (citric acid).

When these two elements touch water, they change their chemistry. The citric acid becomes sodium citrate, and the baking soda releases carbon dioxide, much like an Alka Seltzer or dissolvable ibuprofen tablet does when dropped in water. As the outer layers dissolve, the other oils, fragrances, and scents contained within start to mix into the bathwater.

Best CBD bath bombs are unique in that they contain hemp extract as one of the ingredients inside the mixture. CBD or cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid secreted by mature, male hemp plants. The compound gets extracted from the plant material as an oil or powder.

What Are the Benefits of Using CBD Bath Bombs?

CBD bath bombs can be much more beneficial than a typical bath bomb for many reasons. Research has shown that the compound has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. CBD infused creams and lotions have helped people with chronic pain and inflammation on different parts of their bodies.

CBD is also a draw because it is an all-natural, organic, and non-toxic compound that has little to no side effects. More importantly, for lovers of bath bombs, hemp extract has also been shown to have antibacterial and anti-acne effects.

Cannabidiol, in general, is also helpful for improving or maintaining healthy skin. The reason being that the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a role in helping repair the skin at all levels, from the outer layers to the inner layers of the dermis.

CBD formulations that feature other essential oils and ingredients like Calendula flower extract or argan oil have been proposed as potential remedies for minor skin conditions like dry skin, inflammation, and psoriasis.

Why Should I Use CBD Bath Bombs?

One crucial feature of hemp extract that makes it an ideal skincare treatment is its high lipophilicity. Lipophilic translates as “fat-friendly,” meaning that CBD absorbs quickly into fat cells – fat cells like those found in the many layers of the skin. The fact that cannabidiol is “fat-friendly” has its advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages include:

  • Better absorption into the skin
  • The compound is more bioavailable
  • Only a small dose is needed to produce positive effects

The disadvantages mirror the advantages.

  • The highly lipophilic nature of cannabidiol means it absorbs well into the skin, but too well. When someone applies a cream or oil compound to their skin, the extract will travel through the surface, but its potency will lessen with each layer it passes.

This fact could be an advantage for some, a disadvantage for others. If a person wishes to apply a cannabidiol oil or cream to treat a minor skin problem, like dry skin or slight inflammation, then they can apply a small amount of a low-dose cream to feel its effects.

If the problem is more serious, like a chronic condition of arthritis, users would possibly need a higher dose or continue with other, more traditional treatments. This, even though a topical, low-dose CBD cream (6.2mg) used to treat inflammation caused by arthritis in rats showed promise.

Again, the versatility and non-toxicity of cannabidiol mean that people can also utilize it for non-medical reasons. The best CBD bath bomb might not be the best way to treat a chronic medical problem like arthritis, but it could ease swelling and inflammation, as well as promote feelings of relaxedness.

Should I Use A CBD Bath Bomb for Pain Relief?

The FDA does not recognize cannabidiol and all CBD products as an approved treatment for anything, save for one medicine – Epidiolex. All the studies here mention only the possibility that best CBD has to treat things like chronic pain and inflammation.

Users should never replace their approved treatments for chronic conditions for a CBD-only regimen. With that said, a person could seek out the advice and approval of a medical professional for using cannabidiol as a possible alternative or additional treatment.

If the doctor approves and notes no complications from mixing it with other medications, a person could use a bath bomb as a way to relax or soothe sore and aching muscles. After all, a simple bath with or without any bath bomb could help someone relieve tension or mild pain, all on its own.

Adding a bath bomb filled with CBD could potentially help with minor symptoms of pain. But users should note that more severe instances of pain, chronic or otherwise, require appropriate medical attention and treatment.

Should I Use a CBD Bath Bomb for Anxiety?

Apart from its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, studies have also pointed to CBD’s anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. Scientists are not sure as to how exactly cannabidiol promotes an anti-anxiety effect. They believe that the compound interacts with specific receptors that then trigger the release of serotonin and other calm-inducing chemicals, but again, this is not proven.

Treating anxiety is a central reason that people decide to try the hemp extract. Not only that, baths themselves (without the aid of a CBD bath bomb) have been shown to promote stress-relief and calmness. Taken alone, best CBD and a warm bath can both help provide relief and reduce anxiety. Combining the two by using a CBD bath bomb could potentially have an even more significant anxiolytic effect.

Should I Use a CBD Bath Bomb for Skin and Haircare?

Cannabidiol can have positive effects on the skin and hair. The human endocannabinoid system has an important role in regulating and maintaining healthy skin. As one study author pointed out, the ECS can:

“Сontrol the proper and well-balanced proliferation, differentiation and survival, as well as immune competence and/or tolerance, of skin cells.”

They go on to mention how an out-of-balance ECS could lead to the development of skin disorders like acne, itchiness, and hair growth problems. The study does not explicitly state how cannabidiol could potentially help with all these disorders, but other studies do provide a theory. Take acne as an example.

Acne occurs when levels of a particular hormone – sebum – get too high, resulting in the high, fat-cell production that leads to acne. A CB2 agonist – like cannabidiol – could disrupt the production of endocannabinoids that spur on sebum production, reducing the swelling and inflammation associated with acne.

Acne is just one example. As the endocannabinoid system has signals and receptors throughout the skin, cannabidiol has the potential to strengthen and maintain skin and hair cells.

Should I Use a CBD Bath Bomb to Relax?

Baths, in general, are an excellent way to relax. Whether you want to explore the potential that the best CBD bath bomb has is up to you. Bath bombs started as a variation on the traditional bubble bath. They have always tried to promote relaxation.

Before cannabidiol, bath bombs featured other essential oils and ingredients like lavender, argan oil, and hibiscus, to name a few. These other exotic ingredients are also believed to provide stress-relief via their pleasing, satisfying aromas. Only, cannabidiol has more far-reaching potential and more scientific evidence to show it than those other sweet-smelling oils.

How Do I Use a Bath Bomb?

Every bath bomb is extremely easy to use.

  • First, fill up your bathtub to whatever level you want – shallow or deep.
  • Once the water has reached your preferred level, you can drop the bath bomb into the water and watch as it fizzles away.
  • Once it is dissolved, you can get into the tub and stay there for about half an hour.

Will a CBD Bath Bomb Get Me High?

No, a CBD bath bomb will not get you high. Cannabidiol will not get you high either. Although cannabidiol and its evil cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol, aka THC are both cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant, they are very different.

THC has intoxicating properties. It bonds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors that then set off all the other chemical processes in the brain that make a person “high.” Cannabidiol does not bond to these receptors, which does not lead to intoxication.

CBD will likely not show up on any drug test for several reasons:

  • Drug tests do not test for cannabidiol, individually; they test only for tetrahydrocannabinol
  • While there are trace amounts of THC in some CBD products, the levels are so low that they would not register
  • Bath bombs contain moderate doses of CBD – between 30mg and 100mg – with much of it being lost to mixing with water, soaps and through absorption in the skin

However, one of the most widely-used drug tests, the Rapid Duquenois Test, cannot distinguish between cannabidiol and THC. Even worse, it takes a CBD sample (a gummy, or CBD-heavy dry herb) and converts it to THC via the chemical agents in the solution, creating a false positive.

The false positives produced by this test have caused problems for many throughout the country.
The only way to control against a false positive would be to stop using cannabidiol altogether, especially if drug tests are a regular part of your life.

Can I Make CBD Bath Bombs at Home?

cbd-bath-bombs-making-image

Yes, you can make a CBD bath bomb at home. You can also make regular bath bombs at home. Bath bombs were first invented in someone’s home – Mo Constantine, the co-founder of Lush Cosmetics. She took inspiration from an Alka Seltzer and started experimenting in her home bathtub.

A bath bomb needs at least four essential ingredients:

  • Baking soda
  • Citric acid
  • Epsom salts (or sea salts)
  • Corn starch

From these four base or “dry” ingredients, users can add their preferred oils, fragrances, and essences, like cannabidiol or patchouli or rosewood or sandalwood … the list goes on. Users could also add unique, singular touches like dried flower petals, glitter, or food coloring.

Making a bath bomb is merely adding the “dry” ingredients to the “wet” ingredients, slowly and with caution to avoid clumps forming. Once the mixture has a pliable, clump-free texture, users can then take the mixture and utilize a special mold to shape them into small, little bombs.

Once you have finished, let the newly-made bath bombs dry and harden for at least a day inside the mold. And, if at first, you don’t succeed or if your mixture is clumpy and unmanageable, you can try again by whisking in the ingredients one tablespoon at a time.

Final Thoughts: CBD Bath Bombs: Bathe Better

CBD bath bombs are one more example of how hemp extract can take some everyday-object (like a bath bomb) and make it useful for you, potentially. The same thing has already happened to things like foods, creams, balms, even water, all of which have received the cannabidiol “treatment.”

CBD bath bombs are especially suitable for non-medical users, as well as for people who are looking for a therapeutic and familiar way to take the hemp supplement. Bath bombs and hemp extract are a good team-up as they complement another. Hemp extract absorbs easily into the skin (and not into water) so users can be sure that they are taking in the compound while just lying in the tub.

Have you ever tried a bath bomb, cannabidiol, or not? Would you try one given all the potential benefits of cannabidiol? Let us know in the comments section what you think.
